Product Review – Rainforest Moisture Shampoo

I’m a huge fan of The Body Shop products. Huge, huge, huge fan. I’ve tried a wide variety of shampoos on the market; natural ones, salon ones, standard drug store ones. They have a wide variety of effects.

The Body Shop's Rainforest Moisture shampoo.

The Body Shop’s Rainforest Moisture shampoo.

I picked this product up a little over a month ago and have introduced it into my showering routine. Even though I don’t like the smell of coconut at all, I can’t help but enjoy the subtle scent mixed in with the others of this shampoo! The shampoo is very thick and pools nicely in the palm of my hand. I don’t have to worry about spilling it off my hand when I put the bottle down like I do with drug store products. I strongly recommend you follow the simple instructions on the back if you want good results. Between working at The Body Shop and reading reviews of the product online before I bought it, I’ve heard mixed opinions, and now that I’ve used it, I see why. If you simply pour the product into your hand and try to work it into a lather in your hair, you will miss spots and your hair will not feel clean at all. It’s frankly disappointing. Don’t stop here! On the back of the bottle (I don’t read instructions, so I didn’t notice this when I bought it), it says to work into a lather in the hands first and then work through your hair. This is they key to making this product work for you. Even if you have a lot of hair and have to use a lot of product, you don’t have to worry about wasting it thanks to its thickness. It will stay on your hands as you lather and once it starts to foam on your hands, work it into your hair from root to tip all over.

On days when my hair is particularly dry I like to leave it in the second time I wash my hair while I was my face, then rinse them both off, just so I get a little more of the moisture effects in my hair.

Here’s an important note! If you’ve never used a natural product like this before, you might think it’s not working because you’re not getting a big bundle of soap in your hair when you lather it. On days when my hair is particularly oily, I might only have the foam from my hands for a second before it goes away visually. Don’t get me wrong, it still cleans your hair wonderfully like that! The reason why it doesn’t lather is because it’s not filled with artificial products and chemicals that cause that foam to happen. Just because it foams, doesn’t mean you’re cleaning effectively! In fact, products that do foam a lot tend to strip your hair of their natural oils and leave them dryer than before, so even though it might feel clean, you’re actually damaging it quite a bit.

Moving on! You really don’t need a lot of this product to make it work. For the amount of hair I have (and boy is it thick) I use about a toonie sized amount the first time and a quarter size the second time. That might sound like a lot considering how short my hair is, but when I use drug store products like Garnier, Herbal Essences, or Pantène, I’m almost filling my palm the first time and using a toonie sized amount the second time to get the same cleaning effects.

I used this product on my boyfriend’s hair the last time he was over, and his hair is usually pretty dry. It feels rough, and it’s quite thick for being short. When his hair dried, he kept touching his hair because he was impressed by how soft it was, and he only washed once and didn’t use conditioner at all c:

Overall, I am quite happy with this product. I know I can’t convince people who have already used it (believe me, I’ve tried while at work!), and that’s to be expected. But if you follow the label on the back and buy this during one of the constant sales going on at the shop, you’re getting a great product for a great price.
