Home Remedy Review – Lemon Baking Soda Mask!

This is my first Home Remedy Review, and it is probably my favourite thing in the world right now. I found this idea on Pinterest a week ago and gave it a shot a few days later. The concept is simple; the lemon juice dries out the pimples and the acid in it bleaches out redness, as well as destroys blackheads. The baking soda keeps it on your face, and when you scrub it with warm water it turns into a gentle exfoliant. Not to mention this mixture costs a fraction of acne washes!

What you’ll need:

  • 2 tbsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp lemon juice (bottle or from a fresh lemon

* Note that these measurements are what I use. You can use whatever ratio works best for you! I personally like mine to be very thick, but if you want it to be more like a paste or cream, add more lemon juice until you’re content!

So, grab a small bowl and dump in two level tablespoons of baking soda. Pour out one teaspoon of lemon juice and dump it into the bowl, too. It’s going to fizz a lot and turn a pale yellow colour; that’s good! Mix it together with a spoon (or something) until you get a nice, yellow-y paste. It might not look like much, but these measurements produce enough to cover your entire face and neck. Next, if you’re not already there, take your mixture into the washroom and rub it generously over your face, making sure to get right in beside your nose and below your bottom lip (blackhead-prone spots!). It might sting/tingle/burn a little, that’s just fine too. I myself have very sensitive skin, and I can use this mixture for a half hour at a time without harming my skin or causing redness.

If the mixture is running off your face, mix in pinch by pinch more baking soda until it stays on without a problem. If it is too thick, add a smidgen more lemon. Leave the mixture on anywhere from 5-30 minutes. I leave it on for 30 for MAXIMUM STRENGTH! (hehe!), but if you’re worried about the stinging/burning/tingling, go ahead an wash it off. When you’re ready to, get your hands wet with warm water and scrub the baking soda mixture over your face (the exfoliant), then rinse it all off. Right away you should see better looking blackheads, clearer, brighter skin; and maybe even reduction in size of some pimples! Even if your skin is clear and you decide to use this, your skin should look brighter.

I’ve used this mixture twice now, and my blackhead problem skin is looking so much better. My cysts and large pimples get smaller with every use, and the redness starts to go away immediately! If you want to go all out, use lemon juice as a toner morning and night! It will really help with pore-size reduction, getting rid of blackheads and pimples and keeping your complexion bright and clear c: Just pour a little on a cotton ball or cotton pad and rub it over your skin.

A few people have been asking how often to use this and I figure it’s really personal preference. I use it once a week, and I wouldn’t recommend using it more than twice in one week since it might dry out your skin. When that happens, your acne can actually get worse, your skin can crack and flake, you can develop wrinkles and so on.

I hope this mixture works for you, too! I’d love to hear how it’s working for you if you do decide to use it. On a side note, you can add a few drops of tea tree oil to the mixture as well (it’s a natural disinfectant!) I don’t have any right now, so I’m not using it in my mixture.

Best of luck!

Product Review – Biosilk Silk Therapy

Hey, everyone! I’m back with another product review for you.

As some of you may know, Anime North took place this weekend in Toronto, and I went. I spent about five hours in a salon with a friend of mine, and the girl doing her hair put some of this in my hair. I ended up letting her bleach it (with an ammonia-free product that her salon offers ♥ ) Anyway, she finished my hair and gave a bottle of this product to us to split on an incredible discount!

So, with my hair now blonde and this bottle of liquid gold, I was ready for the convention. I proceeded to colour my hair like a rainbow for my cosplay, which fried my hair further. The damage was no where near as bad because of the ammonia-free product and the immediate use of Biosilk after the bleaching. I’ve been using it every day since, and it only takes a dime-sized amount to cover my hair. My hair is soft, shiny, straight and so manageable. I haven’t had to straighten it like I usually do, because it has been air drying perfectly straight for my comfort. My hair colour is lasting longer, too.

To sum up this short review, Biosilk is wonderful. I haven’t encountered a downside apart from its cost. If your hair is fried and breaking, or just frizzy, I recommend giving this product a try. It handles beautifully in humid weather, keeping your hair nice and smooth. All in all, I’m pretty content. Even though a single bottle of this is approximately 50$, it lasts about a year of daily use in moderate amounts.

My new hair! I have to colour it black again for work, though.

  • Good sized bottle
  • A little goes a LONG way!
  • Feels great on your skin (wipe the excess on your face, it’s great)
  • Amazing at repairing damage
  • A little bit expensive
  • Use wet or dry, no blow dry

The Quest for Long Hair! Month 1

Every day I think to myself “wow, I love that hairstyle. I wish I could put my hair in a bun like that!” or something similar. Then, I decide that I’m going to grow out my hair, no matter what! But then, as weeks go by of tying my hair in a tiny little ponytail so it stays out of my face, I get frustrated and cut my hair back to short on a whim. Today, I’ve decided to once more make this attempt! But, this time, I’m using motivation other than just pictures.

As you might have noticed on the sidebar, there’s an 8 month countdown! I used a calculator to determine when my hair would be approximately chin length (stupid stubble), and it will take about that long! So, the countdown begins. Every month on the 21st I will post updates on my hair: length, colour etc, until it is the desired length!

May 21st, 2013

Month 1, approximately 5″ on top.

I’m going to start taking hair and nail vitamins (even though my nails grow like weeds and are already strong), I’ve started today to drink more water, more frequently, and I’m going to start eating better and exercising more! I’ll keep you all up to date on my diet, exercise plan, beauty routine etc.

Product Review – Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition

I started using this product about a month ago. I bought it so I could stop using conditioner on my hair, since it leaves my hair feeling heavy, flat and rather oily.

I went through my usual shower routine, skipping conditioner, and towel dried my hair when I got out. Following the instructions on the back of the bottle, I simply shook the mixture together, sprayed over my hair (three squirts was enough for me) and passed a comb through it.

And boy, do I mean passed.

My hair is tangly, wavy, and overall annoying. I usually have to tug knots out with a comb or a brush after a shower, even when I used a deep conditioner. But three sprays of this product made my hair smooth and tangle free! I was very impressed.

Then, the moment of truth. I let my hair air dry (this product was appealing because I didn’t have to blow dry to activate) and examined it thoroughly. While most oils and deep conditioners leave my hair looking greasy at the roots, or rather flat, or greasy to the touch, this one absorbed right in and made my hair smooth and shiny. Flyaways were mostly tamed, there was a distinct shine that wasn’t there the last time I had showered.

I’ve used this product every time I get out of the shower since then, and I have only used conditioner once when I coloured my hair again. Overall, I’m very pleased with the results. As someone with greasy, problematic hair, I’m pleased to report that I can now wash it every other day without it looking flat and gross! My hair is healthier and much easier to manage.

My rating would have to be 4.5/5

  • No blow drying needed
  • Not greasy
  • Lightweight
  • Inexpensive
  • Long-lasting
